I have talked in earlier post about transforming mecha, This time, I talk I want to about something different, autonomous AI.
Research in autonomous AI are on the works now and little progress is being made each time, along the way.
Famed sci-fi manga-ka Masamune Shirow created Ghost in the Shell and was a great hit among fans, especially sci-fi fans. There is one thing in the GitS series that stood out for me other than Motoko Kusanagi, it was the Tachikoma.
The Tachikoma are 9 robots, each with individual AI. These mechs are mostly for Section 9‘s exclusive use. A good way to describe them are “cute spider tanks” as large as sedan car and Some mecha fans endearingly describe these mecha as moe. The personality of the Tachikoma can be described as a “curiously active, joyful child”. They normally operate as independent units and receive orders from human agents, but they can also be directly piloted from a cockpit in their abdomen.
Standard Tachikoma equipment includes a 7.62x51mm light machine gun mounted in the right arm, a secondary weapon hardpoint in the “snout” (a 50 mm grenade launcher, capable of launching both explosive and gas grenades which can be replaced by a six-barrelled 12.7x99mm Gatling gun), a universal cybernetic connector on an extensible, prehensile cable in the left arm, liquid wires that can be used for grappling, rappelling or for restraining purposes and a built-in thermoptic camouflage system.
As said earlier, they have individual AI and each AI can be synchronized, meaning these critters will gain a shared consciousness, but there is one big quality about the Tachikoma that really impresses me as a mecha fan, and that is each Tachikoma has its own individual personality. A certain Tachikoma has a personality of being a bookworm and an intellectual, while another Tachikoma likes to discuss human topics such as “what it means to be “alive”” and so forth. These critters have individual personalities which is pretty impressive but that works to the Tachikomas’ disadvantage because after a synchronization, the Tachikomas suffer identity confusion since each Tachikoma has the same memories, but each individual Tachikoma having different personalities.
Form the short description of the Tachikomas, one thing is for certain, they have human-like qualities. These Tachikomas can learn, are curious, have individual personalities and suffer identity confusion. As many sci-fi novels depict, in the far-off future, AI will be more human like, having personalities, intellect and capacity to learn like a human being.
I think that the Tachikoma represents the future of highly evolved AI, having human qualities such as personality, identity and the human-like capacity to learn.
